Safety tips for riders & drivers to help prevent motorcycle accidents
Every year, transportation safety officials and others dedicate the month of May to promoting motorcycle safety awareness. This campaign, which coincides with warming weather and far more motorcyclists hitting the roads, is focused on educating the driving public about what they can do to prevent motorcycle crashes and stay safe on the roads.
Supporting this campaign, we at the Piscitelli Law Firm are sharing the following safety tips – for motorcyclists and other drivers. Habitualizing these tips these can help you minimize your risk of a traffic crash, regardless of whether you are behind a wheel or handlebars.
Motorcycle Riding Safety Tips
For motorcyclists, some of the best things to do to enhance safety and prevent motorcycle accidents whenever riding are as follows:
- Only ride when sober, alert and rested.
- Always follow all traffic laws.
- Always wear a DOT-approved safety helmet, along with other important safety gear (like a riding jacket, gloves, boots, etc.)
- Try to stay out of other motorists blind spots.
- Be as visible and predictable as possible so other motorists not only see where you are at the moment but can also anticipate where you’ll be in the next moments.
- Don’t expect other drivers to see, look out for and/or yield to you when riding. In other words, always ride defensively.
- Always check the weather before riding to ensure weather conditions will be favorable for the entirety of the ride.
Preventing Motorcycle Accidents: Tips for Drivers
For other motorists sharing the roads with riders, some of the things they can do to minimize the risk of motorcycle accidents are as follows:
- Never drive when impaired, distracted and/or exhausted.
- Always comply with all traffic laws.
- Leave more room when following or sharing the road with motorcyclists.
- Always check your blind spots before changing lanes, turning, etc. to check for the potential presence of riders.
- Always use blinkers/turn signal indicators when changing lanes or turning so riders can easily predict your intended action (and appropriately respond).
