Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Ohio Jumped Up 16% in 2015, Report Reveals
Last year, there was a significant spike in the number of deadly motorcycle accidents occurring on Ohio roadways, according to the latest reports from officials at the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).
That’s because, from 2014 to 2015, deadly motorcycle wrecks in Ohio climbed by approximately 16 percent. This is well over the national average, which reflected a roughly 10 percent jump in fatal motorcycle crashes across the nation in 2015 – and it puts Ohio among the 31 states that experienced an increase in motorcycle fatalities last year.
Latest Trends in Deadly Motorcycle Accidents on the National Level
Dialing out to evaluate the trends in deadly motorcycle accidents on a national level, GHSA officials reported the following findings:
- The states that saw the highest increases in fatal motorcycle crashes last year included Maine, Vermont, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Wyoming.
- Only 16 states saw a decrease in motorcyclist deaths, with the following states being those associated with the biggest drops: South Dakota, Iowa, Utah, North Dakota, and new Jersey.
- Last year was the third time in U.S. history when the total number of deadly motorcycle accidents in across the nation climbed above the 5,000 mark.
- While various factors may be contributing to the remarkable increases in deadly motorcycle accidents in 2015, just some of those cited by GHSA officials included:
- Lower fuel prices and a stronger economy (leading to more riders on the road, as well as motorcyclists generally riding for longer period of time)
- More urban riding (where conditions are typically more complicated)
- The repeal of helmet laws in certain states
Commenting on these preliminary findings, GHSA Executive Director Jonathan Adkins has explained that:
State and national data illustrate that motorcyclists are far more likely to be injured or killed in a crash than motor vehicle occupants. GHSA and its members will continue to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based motorcycle safety countermeasures to improve rider safety and, ultimately, save lives.
